Data Disclosure Statement

The AAMC and AMA have historically collected resident census data and program information. The data collected in the National GME Census is used to maintain a shared database between the AAMC and the AMA for research and educational purposes, and to supplement training information in the AMA's Physician Masterfile. The AAMC and the AMA adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines, encompassing all individual resident and program information.

The shared database supports GME Track reporting functions for program directors, GME Administrators, and provides data for such publications as the AMA's Graduate Medical Education Directory, FREIDA Online, the AAMC's Data Book, and the medical education issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Furthermore, both organizations use the data for workforce and GME financing studies, and make the data available to medical schools, HRSA, and other researchers and educational organizations.

Although the National GME Census asks for the Social Security Number (SSN) of residents, the SSN is only used to uniquely identify and match residents across years of data, and is not required. The SSNs are never released for commercial purposes, but may be used in research studies or educational purposes, which again are governed by a strict licensing agreement.

The GME Track application and database itself are secured and not public. The application is password protected and utilizes SSL encryption to safeguard the data maintained on a secure server.
