Through its grants, the Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) seeks to encourage and support research and innovation that address important problems, answer timely questions, and drive the practice of medical education forward. These grants aim to advance the work of all those engaged in improving academic medicine.
This page includes information about current and reoccurring calls for funding proposals. It will be updated throughout the year with links to calls for grant applications as they open. National Grants
National Grant Award Call for Educational Research Grant Proposals
The GEA seeks to fund research projects that address important problems or questions in medical education. High-quality research proposals on the following topics are strongly encouraged, but proposals in other areas are also welcome: professional identify formation; learner well-being and mistreatment; learning environment; faculty development; interprofessional education; competency-based medical education, entrustable professional activities, and milestones; self-directed/self-regulated learning; and virtual learning and COVID-related educational changes.
The GEA may fund multiple projects each year up to $10,000 each. This is a two-year grant. The pre-proposal application process opens in the fall, and the full proposal application process opens in the spring. Both are currently closed.
NEGEA Grants
Medical Education Scholarship, Research and Evaluation (MESRE) Mini-Grant
The NEGEA provides funding to initiate new MESRE projects to stimulate the development of a community of educational scholars. Projects promoting collaboration across institutions and sections (undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, continuing professional development) are encouraged. The NEGEA may award multiple grants up to $3,000 for single-institution submissions and $6,000 for multi-institution submissions each cycle. This is a two-year award. This call for proposals opens in May and closes in July. It is currently closed.

Scholars Grant
The NEGEA provides funding for early- and mid-career faculty to complete an educational scholarship or research project. This grant provides an individual the opportunity for professional development through the design, implementation, and completion of a high-quality educational scholarship project (including curriculum development, educational program, or educational research). The NEGEA may award up to two individuals up to $15,000 each cycle. This is a two-year award. This call for proposals opens in May and closes in July. It is currently closed.

SGEA Grants
Medical Education Scholarship, Research and Evaluation (MESRE) Mini-Grant
To help its members participate in educational scholarship, the SGEA provides up to three research grants, including up to $5,000 for single-institution submissions and $7,500 for multi-institution submissions. This is a two-year grant. The SGEA seeks to promote collaborative projects across institutions and sections (undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, continuing professional development) and to stimulate the development of a community of educational scholars. Project proposals must be consistent with previously published criteria for scholarship and provide additional opportunities for others to build upon this work. This call for proposals opens in May and closes in July. It is currently closed.

Innovation in Medical Education Award
The SGEA supports and encourages innovation in medical education. To recognize members who have developed an innovative approach to medical education and to support participation of SGEA members in activities that promote educational scholarship, the SGEA will provide one award of $5,000 each year to recognize an outstanding innovation in medical education. Innovations which promote collaborative projects across institutions, the health professions, and sections (undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, continuing professional development) will be given extra consideration. This call for proposals opens in May and closes in July. It is currently closed.
Spark Grants for Innovations in Medical Education
The SGEA provides seed funding for in progress or new innovative projects that enhance medical education and aim to help investigators overcome barriers to conducting or starting research. This funding is intended to support the rapid implementation of an innovation, teaching activity, or novel assessment method aimed at improving teaching, learning, or assessment at any point along the medical education continuum. Applicants may request up to $1,000 toward their project. The SGEA may fund five to ten projects each cycle. This call for proposals opens in May and closes in July. It is currently closed.

CGEA Grants
Medical Education Scholarship, Research and Evaluation (MESRE) Mini-Grant
The CGEA seeks proposals that will promote scholarship in medical education and advance the community of scholars in the Central region. The CGEA may provide one to three research grants, including up to $5,000 for single-institution projects and up to $7,000 for multi-institution projects. Priority is given to multi-institution projects that foster collaborations among sections (undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, continuing professional development). Consistent with the requirements of scholarship, the results of these projects must be made public, available for peer review, and available for others to build upon. This call for proposals opens in May and closes in July. It is currently closed.

WGEA Grants
Medical Education Scholarship, Research and Evaluation (MESRE) Mini-Grant
The WGEA seeks to promote scholarship in medical education and advance the community of scholarship within the Western region. Investigators can request up to $5,000 to initiate a new study or up to $1,000 to complete an ongoing study (“finishing award”). The call for proposals for the 2024-2025 cycle is open. The deadline for submissions is Monday, July 29 at 11:59 pm PT.
